The dog days of summer are here, but that doesn’t mean our appearance should go to the dogs. Admittedly, looking cool while the heat is on can be challenging, so here are some summer beauty dos and don’ts:
1) DO get a pedicure.
If you think people don’t notice chipped nail polish or scruffy heels, think again. And if a pro pedi isn’t an option, keep your feet neat at home, including moisturizing them daily.
2) DON’T dress for the beach ─ unless you’re at the beach.
It’s amazing the number of people who think heat waves make halter tops and skimpy sundresses appropriate office wear, including women who are 40 plus. (Men are guilty of their own summer dressing sins, but that’s a topic for another blog!)
3) DO invest in quality shades.
Besides making a great style statement, sunglasses prevent the squinting that leads to crow’s feet. Look for shades that are labeled as blocking 99 – to 100 percent of UV rays, which helps protect against sun damage that can lead to cataracts or macular degeneration.
4) DON’T get a chemical peel or laser treatment.
These procedures can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so hold off on them until the fall.
5) DO wear sunscreen religiously.
Use a product that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with a minimum SPF 30. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before exposure and reapply throughout the day. For more info, check out the Canadian Dermatology Association’s list of recognized sunscreens or the U.S.-based Skin Cancer Foundation’s product finder.
6) DON’T give up on makeup completely.
This is the season when it makes sense to lighten up on cosmetics, but blotting powder or blotting papers, bronzer and a summery lip gloss or lipstick can help you stay a summer beauty.
7) DO bare your legs.
There’s nothing summery about hosiery, and unless your office mandates covered legs, go bare when you can. Of course, doing so requires smooth, moisturized legs, but not necessarily tanned ones. If self-conscious about pasty gams, apply self tanner or spray-on leg makeup (I use Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs in Light Glow, due to an allergy to self tanner).
8) DON’T be tempted by short shorts.
I’m not big on dressing rules defined by age, but to obey the laws of decorum ─ and cellulite ─ Daisy Dukes are strictly for those under 35 (and even then, should be viewed cautiously unless you answer to the name Gisele Bündchen).
9) DO don a stylish hat.
A topper with some brim helps you make a statement even if your hair and makeup are wilting, while shielding your face from the sun.
10) DON’T forget to enjoy the season!
Remember even when you feel beaten by the heat, in a few months you’ll likely be wishing it were summer again.
